Abstract
To examine the impact of the language of wider communication (LWC) learning program on the overall academic performance and other outcomes of students who have limited competency in the LWC, the authors conducted a randomized field experiment of a computer assisted learning (CAL) program that teaches rural ethnic minority students LWC language skills. The result demonstrates that a Mandarin CAL language program has the potential to provide a relatively quick and effective remedy for (at least part of) the severe underperformance of rural minority children in China in both Mandarin and other subjects.
