Prof. Liu Chengfang led a team to Liyang City, Jiangsu Province to research

From March 31 to April 3, 2023, Prof. Liu Chengfang, Associate Dean of School of Advanced Agriculture, Peking University and Deputy Director of CCAP, led a group of senior visiting scholars, including Associate Prof. Zheng Xuhuan, Postdoctoral Fellow Xie Gang, and Doctoral Candidate Wang Tianyi, to carry out a research on "High Quality Development of Agricultural and Rural Areas" in Liyang City, Jiangsu Province, China. The research was initiated by Academician Zhang Linxiu, Director of the International Ecosystem Management Partnership (IEMP-UNEP) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and was accompanied by three Associate Research Fellows (Bai Yunli, Xu Xiangbo, and Sun Mingxing), two Assistant Research Fellows (Fu Chao and Li Li) and two PhD students from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Resources (IGSR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Associate Prof. Zheng Xiaoqi from the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT) and two PhD students from Agricultural University of China (AAU). China Agricultural University (CAU) and 2 PhD students.

In the morning of April 1, the research team went to Jiandong Village, Shangxing Town, Liyang City and had a discussion with the village cadres. Jiandong Village is located in the north of Shangxing Town, Liyang City and belongs to the old revolutionary area of Maoshan. Through exchanges, the research team gained an in-depth understanding of the village's demographic structure, industrial development, history, village collective economy and villagers' income. In the afternoon, the research team went into households in groups to understand the production and living conditions of different types of farmers.

On the morning of April 2, the research team went to Niumatang Village in Shangxing Town for research. Niumatang Village is located in the west side of Shangxing Town, Changzhou, and belongs to the first batch of pilot villages of Jiangsu Province Characteristic Rural Village at provincial level in 2017. Relying on the resource advantages of the village, Niumatang Village seizes the opportunity of the government's rural revitalization project and the investment of commercial enterprises, and actively explores the effective path of rural revitalization and high-quality development through the development of the agricultural tourism industry and sweet potato industry.

In the afternoon of April 2, the research team systematically sorted out and summarized the research. The team members all said that "the masters are in the people", through talking with township cadres, village cadres and villagers, they have benefited a lot, and said that they must go to the grassroots to conduct extensive research, to deeply understand the current situation and needs of rural development, to grasp the pulse of grass-roots development, so as to put forward the research topics of real significance, and to better play the function of scientific research in political affairs.
