On March 28, 2023, a seminar on the launching and implementation plan of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) major project "Synergistic Observation and Transformation Mechanisms and Simulation of Rural Territorial Systems" was held in Beijing. More than 70 participants attended the seminar, including leaders from the Department of Earth Sciences of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the lead organization of the project, members of the Advisory Expert Committee of the project, researcher Liu Yan Sui from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGSR), and subject leaders and researchers. Prof. Liu Chengfang, Vice Dean of School of Modern Agriculture and Deputy Director of China Agricultural Policy Research Center, Peking University, Prof. Luo Renfu and Postdoctoral Fellow Xie Gang, Researcher Feng Jian of School of Urban and Environmental Studies, and Associate Prof. Zhang Bo of School of Government and Management attended the meeting.

At the launching ceremony, Xiong Juhua, Director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), delivered a speech on behalf of the NSFC, saying that the major project of rural territorial system is based on the major strategic needs of the national rural revitalization and the needs of disciplinary development, which is highly valued by the NSFC, and he hoped that the project will closely integrate with the major national needs, give full play to the comprehensive cross-cutting advantages of geography and make breakthroughs in the major theories, and innovations in the research methodology.

The next session of reporting and discussion on the implementation plan of the project and topics was presided over by Academician Fu Bojie, Director of the Project Advisory Expert Committee. Firstly, Prof. Liu Yan Sui, the person in charge of the major project, reported the implementation plan of the project. After that, the leaders of the three topics, Prof. Liu Yan Sui, Prof. Zhang Liqiang, and Academician Guo Renzhong, reported on the implementation plan of the topics, and Prof. Wang Liming reported on the implementation plan of the comprehensive integration platform. After listening to the reports, the experts and the leaders of the Foundation Committee made comments and guidance. Finally, the project leader, Prof. Liu Yan Sui, summarized and responded to the valuable comments and suggestions made by the experts.

During the exchange and discussion of the implementation plan of the sub-topics, Prof. Liu Chengfang, on behalf of the Peking University team, reported on the positioning of the scientific path and its management standardization system in the research of this project under Topic V "Scientific path and its management standardization system" of Topic III "Dynamic simulation of the scenario of rural revitalization and exploration of the path", Contribution and implementation program. Finally, Prof. Liu Yan Sui made a concluding speech, focusing on the main points and key contents of the synergistic innovation between the project and the sub-topics, emphasizing the core and significance of the implementation mechanism of "one office and four groups" of the major projects, and further clarifying the implementation plan and work arrangement of this year's major projects.
