On May 23, 2023, led by Mr. Xie Wei from the School of Advanced Agriculture of Peking University and China Agricultural Policy Research Center, students taking the course "Agricultural Products Market and Trade" and some 2020 graduate students from the School of Modern Agriculture went to Beijing Xinfadi Agricultural Products Wholesale Market to carry out field teaching activities on the topic of agricultural products market and trade.

Visiting the Comprehensive Trading Hall of Agricultural Products

The students first came to the comprehensive trading hall of agricultural products and visited the sand table model of Xinfadi. The staff of Xinfadi introduced the origin and development of Beijing Xinfadi as well as the distribution of various kinds of agricultural products trading halls, and answered the students' questions about the national layout of Xinfadi in detail.

Afterwards, the students went into the national famous and excellent agricultural products sales area distributed on both sides of the comprehensive agricultural products trading hall, and learned more about the high-quality agricultural and sideline products transported from various provinces and cities across the country. By comparing the characteristics of agricultural products in different provinces and cities, students deeply appreciate that, due to the vastness of our country, agricultural products are varied and widely distributed, and the characteristics of agricultural products in different regions vary greatly. With the further improvement of people's living standards, urban and rural residents of the diversity of agricultural products will also increase the demand, which also puts forward higher requirements for the development of the national agricultural products circulation system.

Field visit to various kinds of agricultural products sales area

Afterwards, the students went deep into the market and entered the fine fruit sales area, vegetable and grain oil sales area, international fruit trading area and pork trading hall for on-site learning. In the Fine Fruits Sales Area, Vegetable Grain and Oil Sales Area and International Fruit Trading Area, students visited different types of agricultural products sales stores, learned about the sources, varieties, characteristics and quality of different fruits and vegetables, and also felt the prices and sales of different products. By asking the dealers about the organization of sources and customer management, the students further understood the market circulation process of agricultural products from field to table. In the pork trading hall, the students not only saw the pork traders, but also visited the wholesale area of white strips, and learned in detail about the daily work of the staff in disinfection, quarantine, entering the market, trading, and then disinfection, so that they had a deeper understanding of the management of the trading of agricultural products and the work of epidemic prevention and quarantine.

Conducting a mini symposium

After the field visit, the students held a mini symposium with Mr. Liu Tong, the director of the Statistics Department of Beijing Xinfadi Market. Using the concept of "big circulation", Mr. Liu Tong explained in detail the trading mode of Beijing Xinfadi, and the important role it plays in effectively reducing market prices and ensuring the safe and stable supply of agricultural products in the capital. In the question and answer session, students asked questions about storage of agricultural products and short-term marketing of agricultural products, and Mr. Liu Tong answered them in detail.

On the way back, the students continued to have a warm discussion about what they had seen and heard during the visit. From the field visit to the discussion and exchange, this teaching activity not only provided students with an all-round and in-depth understanding of China's agricultural products market and circulation mode, but also stimulated their interest and enthusiasm in the study of issues related to agricultural products market and trade.
