Recently, researcher Huang Kaixing, as the first and corresponding author, and his co-authors published an article in the Journal of Population Economics, a top journal of population economics, to analyse the impact of global warming on obesity rates. Based on annual data from 152 countries from 1975 to 2016, the study found that global warming significantly increased obesity rates in temperate countries, while leading to lower rates in only a few tropical countries. Estimates suggest that each 1-degree Celsius increase in average annual global temperature would lead to an increase of about 79.7 million obese adults worldwide, or a 12.3 per cent increase. Whether based on temperature intervals, seasonal average temperatures, temperature variability, or heat shocks, similar results were presented. In addition, the study found significant differences in the magnitude of the impact across countries with different income levels, age structures, and education levels. Finally, after comparing the results of the baseline model with the long difference model, the study found that long-term adaptation may not significantly mitigate the effects of global warming on obesity in temperate regions.
