From January 4 to 6, 2025, Professor Chengfang Liu, Vice Dean of the School Advanced Agricultural Sciences and Deputy Director of the China Center Agricultural Policy at Peking University  , led a delegation to attend the "2025 Global Tropical Agriculture and Economics Summit Forum" in Haikou, Hainan. The forum, hosted by Hainan University and organized by the International Business School of Hainan University, brought together over 80 experts and scholars from around the world. The event focused on the theme of addressing agricultural development challenges in tropical developing countries under the new global framework.

On the morning of January 4, Diangong Gao, a member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Hainan University, delivered the opening speech at the conference. Dr. Linxiu Zhang, Director of the United Nations Environment Programme International Ecosystem Management Partnership (UNEP-IEMP), presented the keynote report on "Agricultural and Rural Development Transformation and Research Prospects: An International Perspective."

Professor Yaojiang Shi, Director of the Institute of Educational Experimental Economics at Shanxi Normal University, Professor Chengfang Liu, Vice Dean of the School Advanced Agricultural Sciences at Peking University, Associate Professor Chunxia Jiang from the Business School at the University of Aberdeen, UK, and Professor Tonglong Zhang from the International Business School at Hainan University each delivered thematic reports.

The sessions were chaired by Professor Zelin Tong, Vice Dean of the International Business School at Hainan University, and Professor Nengrui Xu, also Vice Dean of the International Business School at Hainan University.

In the thematic report titled "Long-term Impacts of Depression on Labor Market Outcomes," Professor Chengfang Liu first analyzed the mechanisms through which depression affects labor market performance from a theoretical perspective. Utilizing nationally representative public data, she described the spatiotemporal characteristics and group differences in depression incidence.

She then elaborated on the research design and empirical identification strategies, systematically examining the long-term effects of individual depression on labor market performance at both the extensive and intensive margins.

Finally, Professor Liu summarized the marginal contributions of this study and discussed potential directions for future research.

In the afternoon, four parallel forums were successfully held. Forum 1 Dr. Linxiu Zhang from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) engaged with participating experts in discussions on global tropical agricultural development and international cooperation. Forum 2 Professors Yaojiang Shi, Renfu Luo, and Ai Yue, among others, focused on the theme of rural high-quality development and education. Forum 3 Professors Tonglong Zhang, Qiran Zhao, and Yunli Bai reviewed the achievements of 20 years of rural development surveys in China and discussed plans for future investigations. Forum 4 Professors Qinghua Shi, Chengfang Liu, Chunxia Jiang, and Yu Bai provided detailed feedback on student presentations under the theme "Showcasing Emerging Research in Rural Development and Talent Cultivation," supporting the development of young scholars.

The forums were moderated by Jianan Wang, Kailei Wei, Tonglong Zhang, Ling Liu, and Qing Yang.

In Forum 4, Postdoctoral Researcher Tianyang Liu delivered a presentation titled "COVID-19 and Rural-Urban Educational Disparity: Evidence from China’s National College and High School Entrance Exam." Using administrative data from college and high school entrance exams in K City and data from the China Family Panel Studies, he empirically examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on rural-urban educational disparities and explored the underlying mechanisms.
