Professor Jikun Huang of Peking University Conducts Research in Jiangxi on Modern Agricultural Development, Discussing Discipline Development and Services for Comprehensive Rural Revitalization

From April 11 to 12, Professor Jikun Huang, Dean of the School of Advanced Agricultural Sciences at Peking University and Director of the Jiangxi Institute for Rural Revitalization Strategy, visited Xingguo County and Nanchang in Jiangxi Province to conduct field research on modern agricultural development. He also engaged in academic exchanges with faculty and students at Jiangxi Agricultural University, holding in-depth discussions on the development of the discipline of agricultural and forestry economic management, as well as on how to better serve research on “agriculture, rural areas, and farmers” (the “three rural issues”) in support of the implementation of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan.

Xiaoyi Chen, Member of the Standing Committee of the Xingguo County Party Committee; Lian Bi, Deputy County Magistrate; Professor Jianfu Li , Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Jiangxi Agricultural University; Professor Wenmei Liao, Party Secretary of the same school; Professor Zhenlin Weng, Executive Dean of the Jiangxi Institute for Rural Revitalization Strategy; and Professors Zhaojiu Chen, Jinyong Guo, Kai Hu, and Xiaochun Liu participated in related activities.

On the morning of April 11, Professor Huang and his delegation visited Meijiao Town in Xingguo County for field research. They went deep into rural areas and households to understand the production and living conditions of village cadres and residents. The team examined changes in permanent population, non-agricultural employment, agricultural production, land transfer, and agricultural socialized services. They also interacted with village officials and farmers, analyzing the current challenges and development opportunities facing agriculture and rural areas.

In the afternoon, the group visited Gaoduo Village in Gaoxing Town. They spoke with farmers working diligently in the fields and along roadsides, discussing topics ranging from agricultural production to migrant work of family members and pension distribution; from farm size to agricultural product sales and self-consumption; and from seedling production and variety selection to agricultural input use and socialized services. Through these interactions, they gained a deep understanding of the new changes taking place in mountainous rural areas.

Subsequently, the research team visited several sites, including Guolando Ecological Park, the Xingguo Red Carp Breeding Farm, and the Gaoxing Agricultural Service Center. They conducted in-depth research on topics such as the development of ecological and leisure agriculture, the application of digital technologies in fisheries, and the development of agricultural socialized services.

At Guolando Ecological Park, the company representative introduced the background, development history, and current operations of the park, and responded to Professor Huang’s questions regarding land, labor, industrial chains, value chains, and ecological benefits, while also sharing personal insights and practical experiences. At the Xingguo Red Carp Breeding Farm, the team visited construction sites and breeding bases for improved varieties, and listened to reports on farm construction, variety breeding, and marketing. They gained a detailed understanding of the practical application of digital technologies in aquaculture, financial support mechanisms for the aquaculture industry, and models and outcomes of integrating technology and capital to benefit farmers. At the Agricultural Service Center, they focused on inquiries regarding capital investment, service radius, service pricing, equipment utilization, and labor employment.

This research and exchange activity provided vivid first-hand materials for deepening collaboration between universities and local governments, and for promoting the role of the agricultural and forestry economic management discipline in serving agricultural and rural development during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. It also built a new bridge for collaborative research between Jiangxi Agricultural University and Peking University.

Professor Huang and his team visited fields, households, and frontline production sites, seeking needs from the people and solutions from practice. This fully demonstrated the clear orientation of agricultural economics research rooted in China’s realities and serving national needs. In the future, the School of Advanced Agricultural Sciences at Peking University will continue to focus on the strategic needs of rural revitalization, strengthen think tank development and talent cultivation, and contribute greater wisdom and strength to accelerating the modernization of agriculture and rural areas.
